Homes saved

NewsEx-Zurgena mayor acquitted on appeal as property rights associations call on the Government to change state planning rules.

A court in Almería has overturned a sentence ordering the demolition of 12 homes in Zurgena, it has emerged.
The homes had been built on rural land and granted building permits by the council in 2005.
The ruling by three judges from the Audiencia Provincial court means the houses in the district of Los Carasoles, most of which are owned by expats, have been saved from the wrecking ball.
In the same verdict, the former mayor of Zurgena, Cándido Trabalón, was cleared of perverting the course of justice after the judges concluded that his decision to grant the homes building permits had been prompted by a favourable architect’s report.
News of the verdict emerged the same week representatives of nine property right associations met with one of the governing Partido Popular party’s major candidates in the forthcoming European elections, Esteban González Pons.
Headed by the AUAN and SOHA.ES associations, the group handed Pons a set of proposals, calling for a change in the country’s planning rules.
